Adelyn’s childhood has looked very different than most. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at just 2 years old, and has spent the last few years undergoing Chemotherapy treatment at Cork University Hospital and Crumlin Hospital. Adelyn has spent long days in hospital waiting rooms and doctors offices, and has missed out on so much of her childhood, from playdates with friends to exploring the outdoors with her family.
Despite the challenges she faces, she approaches each chemotherapy session with courage and determination, with her positive attitude inspiring everyone around her. It was after one such chemotherapy session that Adelyn’s family learned they could apply for a wish! Visualising her wish coming true helped Adelyn to escape the hospital room and inspired hope for the future.
When our volunteers, Marney and Nicola, met with Adelyn and her family, her passion for the outdoors shone through! Adelyn loves the park, playing on the swing set, and her favourite thing to do is to swim. Adelyn wished to go to Center Parcs with her family, and her wish came true recently!
Adelyn, along with her mum, dad and older brother Abel all travelled to Center Parcs, where they stayed in a cosy lodge nestled in longford forest! The family got to enjoy paddy boating, meeting some baby owls, exploring forest trails and of course, swimming! It was a welcome break where the family got to leave their worries behind and spend some quality time together.
Adelyn’s mum told us afterwards: “After three long years of hard treatment, countless hospital visits and days filled with worry, you gave us a reason to smile again. You gave us memories that we will cherish forever. You reminded us that even in the hardest times, kindness and hope can light the way.”
