At just 14 years old and from Kildare, Saule is living with Hirschsprung’s-associated enterocolitis, a serious intestinal infection. Despite the challenges she faces, her love for music shines through in everything she does. When our volunteers Ann Marie and Claire met Saule, they learned about Saule’s love for singing and playing instruments, and how music allows her to express herself creatively.
At home, Saule’s favourite moments are the quiet ones relaxing on her bean bag, listening to the radio, and letting music bring a sense of calm and happiness to her day. Saule’s wish was to have music therapy lessons, because music helps to keep her feel calm and happy. A professional music therapy agency, Neurolinks, who use the therapeutic application of music to aid cognitive, sensory and language function, recommended some introductory sessions, so they could assess Saule’s needs and develop a therapy program tailored to her.
Saule’s wish recently came true, where she had a number of music therapy lessons, discovering different instruments and how they can help her self expression. The sessions had an
incredible impact on Saule, and she discovered new ways to engage and express herself through music.
Saule, Mum Leva and Dad Gytis recently visited the Make-A-Wish team. Saule’s Mum told us “In the last few sessions Saule was getting really good results. We are so happy, the music therapy is working so well on her. She has much less anxiety, her exploration and vocalisation skills are progressing, and she is starting to learn new things much quicker.”
