The golfing season was officially opened in Westport Golf Club on Saturday last by Captains Lorraine Burns and Enda McDonagh, accompanied by President Christy Madigan and junior captains Rachel O’Malley and Gabriel Browne. In what promises to be a unique 2026 down in Carrowholly, the club, under the stewardship of both captains, will have as its charity partner the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ireland.
Founded in 1992, Make-A-Wish Ireland grants life-changing wishes to children aged 3–17 living with life-threatening medical conditions across the country. The organisation works closely with families, medical professionals, and volunteers to create moments of joy, hope, and lasting memories for children facing serious illness. From meeting heroes to once-in-a-lifetime trips or experiences, each wish is tailored to the child, offering not only happiness but also a positive emotional impact during difficult times. The charity relies heavily on community fundraising initiatives like this one in Westport to continue its work nationwide.
The announcement was greeted enthusiastically by over 90 members who were present to welcome the officers to their golfing year. The 9th has been designated as the feature hole where all those required to make a bunker shot will be invited to make a token contribution to the charity via the barcode on the new course signage or inside the clubhouse post golf, ensuring that every round played can help make a real difference in a child’s life.
