Bloom 2025

May 29th – June 2nd

For the first time, Make-A-Wish Ireland® will unveil a specially commissioned Show Garden at this year’s Bord Bia Bloom festival – a deeply symbolic and immersive space called the Make-A-Wish Garden of Hope, designed by Linda McKeown and sponsored by Make-A-Wish Ireland in association with The Smurfit Westrock Foundation.

Created in collaboration with award-winning landscape designer Linda McKeown of BlueLeaf Garden Design, the garden reflects the charity’s mission – to bring hope, strength and joy to children living with critical illnesses – brought to life in a modern, sensory-rich, and emotionally resonant space.

But this garden isn’t just a beautiful space – it’s a vital platform for awareness.

According to Crumlin Children’s Hospital cardiac unit, every year, over 650 children in Ireland are diagnosed with serious cardiac conditions, and it is estimated that 27,000 children nationwide are living with life-threatening illnesses. Despite this, many families who could benefit from a wish are not reaching out to Make-A-Wish – often because they don’t realise they are eligible.

“There’s a common misconception that Make-A-Wish is only for terminally ill children, or that we only operate in Dublin. That’s simply not true. We grant wishes for children across Ireland with a wide range of life-threatening medical conditions,” says Susan McQuaid O’Dwyer, CEO of Make-A-Wish Ireland. She continues, “By creating a garden at Bloom – with over 100,000 visitors expected – we’re putting ourselves in the heart of a national conversation. We want people to leave inspired by the beauty of the garden, but also with a deeper understanding of the importance and impact of the work we do.”

At the garden’s core stands a striking bespoke dandelion sculpture, capturing the exact moment its seeds are carried by the wind – representing the moment a child makes a wish. A kiln-fired piece of art crafted by a past wish child will also feature, showcasing the creative sparks that can be ignited by a single act of kindness.

“Our hope is that people will visit the garden, hear our message, and help us spread the word,” added McQuaid O’Dwyer. “The more people who understand what we do, the

more children we can reach – because every child living with a life-threatening illness deserves happiness, away from medical treatment and hospitals. This garden is a living, breathing tribute to our mission – a space where possibility blooms and the simple act of making a wish is honoured.”

Garden designer Linda McKeown, known for her minimalist, contemporary designs and her support of charitable causes, says:

“I’ve created a contemporary, accessible 10m x 10m space designed to be both a sanctuary and a symbol. I’ve used soft curves, soothing water rills, and a rich tapestry of textures and colours to create a space that reflects the emotional journey of a wish – from anticipation to transformation. Then at its heart, the dandelion sculpture is so evocative – it is fleeting, delicate, and full of promise. I wanted the space to feel the same – a sanctuary that captures the quiet power of a wish.”

Bord Bia Bloom, Ireland’s most unique festival of gardening, food, and sustainable living, returns for a 19th year this June bank holiday weekend (Thursday, May 29th – Monday, June 2nd, 2025). Tickets are on sale at www.bordbiabloom.com
