Ava’s Wish

To have an 18th birthday party

We spoke to volunteer Michelle Lubbe recently after she helped to make Ava's wish come true.

Sometimes you just get to be part of a wish that floors you, even when you’ve been around the volunteer block a few times and know how special it is to work with Make-A-Wish Ireland.

Ava’s Wish was one of those. On April 19th, I had the privilege of volunteering at Ava’s 15th birthday party. What I expected to be a busy, joyful afternoon quickly became something far more meaningful. Something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. From the moment Ava arrived, it was clear this was going to be a birthday like no other. The hall, already filled with balloons, glitter, music, and the delicious scent of warm food.

Her wish was simple but incredibly meaningful, a birthday party surrounded by the people she loves most, filled with dancing, laughter, and celebration. And that wish came to life in the most magical way. The space was transformed into a wonderland. Glitter tattoos and face-painting kept the younger guests (and the two volunteers) beaming, while the photo booth buzzed all afternoon with friends and family capturing playful memories together. A magician wandered through the crowd, performing close-up magic and leaving us wide-eyed and laughing.

But nothing outshone the girl at the centre of it all. Whether she was showing off her moves on the dance floor or sharing cake with her best friends, Ava’s joy was radiant and infectious. Every smile tugged at the hearts of those around her. Her presence brought people together, strangers became teammates, volunteers became friends, and everyone leaned in, wanting to help, give, and be part of the occasion.

By the end of the afternoon, our cheeks hurt from smiling, and our hearts were full. Ava’s party wasn’t just a wish fulfilled; it was a ripple of joy that spread through every person there. The makeup artist, the magician, the photo booth operator, the volunteers, all of us were moved. We came to serve one little girl’s wish, and we left changed by her light. It’s easy to forget how much power one child’s joy can hold. Ava reminded us.

At the end of the day, I felt such gratitude for the privilege of being part of her wish. Ava reminded us why we do what we do, and why we’ll keep showing up for children like her, again and again

Together we can make a difference for children.

Make-A-Wish Ireland has one simple aim – to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, to bring hope, strength and happiness.

With your kind support, you can help us achieve that aim.
