Long days undergoing treatment meant that hospital walls replaced fresh air and enjoying spending time with his family.
Rayyan had to be placed on the heart transplant list and he and his family had to anxiously wait for a life-changing call. During this time, he was encouraged to apply for his wish. Being able to think about his wish and visualise his wish day helped Rayyan to escape his hospital room, and dream big!
When our volunteers, Agata and Emer met with Rayyan, they learned that he is a passionate sports fan, with a love for football and pool. When Rayyan was initially diagnosed, he had to stop playing football, a game that he loves, and this was a difficult adjustment for him. He was encouraged to play pool instead, as it was more physically accessible. He quickly developed a passion for the game, watching YouTube videos to teach himself how to play. His favourite player is Jason Shaw, and he has spent years watching him compete at some of pool’s biggest competitions. It was clear what Rayyan’s wish would be, to meet his hero, Jason Shaw!
As luck would have it, Jason had been touring over the past month. Rayyan’s wish recently came true, when he and his mum Zara travelled for the UK Open Championship. They were met by the Matchroom team on arrival, where Rayyan got his own pool shirt and cue! Next up was their own private tour of the venue, as well as meeting some of the pro’s as they warmed up. After watching the players compete in the championship, Rayyan was in for an incredible surprise, where he got to meet Jason Shaw and even play a few games with him! Jason gave Rayyan some invaluable tips and tricks as they played together, and Rayyan even won a few games!
Rayyan’s mum Zara told us afterwards: Rayyan had a wonderful weekend and really enjoyed himself. Thanks again for arranging everything and making it such a special experience for him. We are incredibly grateful that Rayyan was given this opportunity. It means a great deal to our family, and seeing how happy and excited he was throughout the weekend was truly special. The memories he made will stay with him for a very long time.”
